Unfortunately, two weeks ago my husband's cousin was injured in an accident and paralyzed. He is not even 30 years old. I prefer to call them my cousins, because I love them both so dearly. My youngest son is the same age as theirs, and they are just starting to hang out. You know, at 2 years old, they like to play independently side by side. I can't exactly find the words in my heart to explain what happened. His wife, Cassandra, described it best.
"Auston was in a motor cross accident on Saturday. While doing what he loved, he fractured his spine and severed his spinal cord. The doctors, blessings in their own right, say Auston will have no mobility chest down...they don't know Auston! Auston and I are so grateful for your thoughts and prayers! He will have surgery in the morning at 7:30 am. Please continue to pray for miracles and a strong recovery."
An update from Cassandra April 4th, 2012
Auston is out of surgery and he is doing well. The doctors originally thought his spinal cord was severed but by the grace of God and through all of your prayers, it turns out that his cord is intact. We are calling it a miracle! As of right now, we do not know what his exact prognosis looks like. There is a good chance that he may never walk again but at least there may be a glimmer of hope. We will keep everyone updated. I cannot tell you how blown away we are by every one's generosity and prayers. This is a true testament to the power of prayer! We love you all more than you know!
Auston was transported yesterday to a special rehab center in Colorado with his wife at his side. Their two year old will join them soon. Cassandra is truly an amazing ray of light. I don't think I have ever seen her without a smile as she stands proudly and strongly by his side. I can not fathom what she is going through now, but I think she is amazing! I meant AMAZING!!
And Auston, he is a feisty one alright. The minute I became part of the family I heard stories of his wild adventures. I never once doubted that Auston was living his life to the fullest. If anyone can kick rehabs a** (butt) it is him.
Any prayers would be appreciated. To read more about Auston and Cassandra, or make any donation at all, please visit...
I am so sorry to hear about your cousin! I will keep him and your family in my thoughts.
